Made with an open star tip, the shell is the most popular icing technique of all. In addition to being the basis of many borders, it can also serve as an outline, a heart or flower petals.


Step 1: Shell Border

A shell border can be as simple as icing alone, or intersperse each icing shell with confetti sprinkles, candy-coated chocolates or other mini candies.

Step 2: Fantasy Flower

Starting at outer edge of flower, pipe shell with elongated tail towards center of flower. Repeat, adding additional petals. Add confetti sprinkle, icing dot, swirl or star flower center.

Step 3: Heart

Two shells, when angled just right, make a fanciful icing heart.
