Glazed and Sprinkled Doughnuts

Doughnuts are all the rage and it's so easy to make baked cake-style doughnuts at home when you have the right equipment. We show you a variety of ways to finish these treats off, making them company-perfect!

Preheat oven to 425°F. Spray Doughnut Pan with vegetable pan spray.

In large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Combine buttermilk, eggs and melted butter; add to dry mixture. Beat by hand until just combined. Fill each pan cavity approximately 2/3 full.

Bake 7-9 minutes or until the tops of the doughnuts spring back when touched. Let cool in pan 4-5 minutes. Remove to cooling grid. Finish doughnuts with chocolate, vanilla or cinnamon glaze, cinnamon sugar or confectioners' sugar (see below). For glazed doughnuts, add sprinkles or colored sugars, if desired. Doughnuts are best served fresh.

Spread whole cookies with jam; top with cookies with cut-outs. Gently press together. If desired, lightly dust with confectioners' sugar.

Makes 12 doughnuts.

For Lemon Donuts

Omit nutmeg. Add the grated zest of one whole lemon (about 1 tablespoon). Mix and bake as instructed above.

Chocolate Glaze

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1-2 teaspoons hot water

In medium bowl, melt chocolate chips, butter, and corn syrup in microwave on 50% power for 1 minute, stirring frequently until completely melted. Stir in 1 teaspoon hot water, stirring until the glaze is thick and smooth. Add another teaspoon butter if glaze is too thick. Use immediately to glaze donuts.

Vanilla Glaze

1 cup confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

In small bowl, stir together sugar, milk and vanilla until sugar is completely dissolved. Use immediately to glaze donuts.

Cinnamon Sugar

2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter, melted

In shallow bowl or plate, stir together the sugar and cinnamon. Dip the baked doughnut in melted butter; immediately roll in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.

Confectioners' Sugar Donuts

Put 2/3 cup confectioners' sugar in a resealable plastic bag. Add doughnut, close the bag and shake to coat. Repeat with remaining donuts.

Cinnamon Glaze

2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3-4 tablespoons milk

In shallow bowl or plate, stir together the sugar, cinnamon and milk until sugar is completely dissolved. Use immediately to glaze donuts.
