Scary Spider Cake

Scary Spider Cake

This kooky creature covers lots of ground—at Halloween parties, birthday celebrations and more. Combine Soccer Ball and Mini Ball Pans to create the body and head; add licorice legs connected with gum drops and this slinky creature comes to life.

Cake serves 15.

Step 1

Step 1: Prepare Cake Board

To make a base for the cakes, trace spider shape (using Soccer Ball and Mini Ball Pans as patterns) on double-thick cake boards taped together. Wrap boards and craft block (6 inch square craft block or 6x6x1 in. styrofoam square) with foil.

Step 2

Step 2: Bake Cakes

Bake your favorite cake recipe or mix in prepared Soccer Ball pan and Mini Ball pan, following recipe instructions. Cool in pan on wire rack 10 minutes. Remove from pan and cool completely. Arrange large cake on prepared cake board.

Step 3

Step 3: Ice Cakes

Tint chocolate buttercream icing black and buttercream icing green. Thickly spatula ice small ball cake with black icing; attach to large cake on cake board. Using tip 16 pull-out stars, make black and green body stripes.

Step 4

Step 4: Decorate

Arrange cakes on cake board onto prepared craft block to raise. Attach gumball eyes, M&M's® pupils and candy corn mouth with dots of icing. Flatten one gum drop for nose; attach to head with icing. Cut licorice into eight 2 inch and eight 3-1/2 inch lengths for legs. Insert each short leg piece into a gum drop "joint" (if desired, cut slit in gum drop with knife point); insert large leg piece into other side of gum drop, forming bent leg. Repeat with remaining leg pieces. Insert orange slice "feet" at end of long leg piece. Insert legs into cake.
