Dashing Dots Tiered Cake

You'll be convinced of fondant's decorating versatility when you create this dramatic bow cake. Make as many or as few cake layers as you need to serve party guests.

Top 2 tiers serves 32.

Step 1

Step 1: Make Fondant Bow in Advance

Several days before decorating cake, make fondant bow.

  • Add 2 teaspoons Gum-Tex to 24 oz. of white fondant. Roll out fondant 3/16 in. thick. Cut 12 to 18 strips, 6 in. long, using 2 beaded embossing wheels with 1/3 in. spacer from Ribbon Cutter/Embosser Set. Trim ends of bow strips to form a "V" shape. Fold strips over to form loops. Brush open ends lightly with damp brush; pinch ends together to secure. Allow loops to dry on cornstarch-dusted surface, supporting with crushed tissue inside.
  • Roll leftover fondant 1/8 in. thick and cut a circle with cookie cutter; let dry on cornstarch-dusted surface.
  • When all pieces are completely dry, attach loops to base, overlapping, using fondant adhesive. Let dry completely.
Step 2

Step 2: Bake Cakes

Bake your favorite 2-layer cake recipe or mix following recipe instructions in the 6 in. and 8 in. pans. Cool layers in pans on wire rack 10 minutes. Remove from pan and cool completely.

Step 3

Step 3: Prepare for Stacked Construction

Arrange cakes on same-sized cake boards. Place 8 in. cake on silver cake base, securing with icing. Lightly ice each cake in buttercream icing to prepare for fondant covering. Insert dowel rods into 8 in. layer.

Step 4

Step 4: Cover with Fondant

Tint fondant yellow and peach, reserving some white. Roll out colored fondant 1/8 in. thick; cover 6 in. cake with yellow, 8 in. cake with peach; smooth. Position 6 in. cake on 8 in. tier, placing over dowel rods and centering.

Step 5

Step 5: Decorate Cake

Roll out reserved white fondant 1/8 in. thick and cut circles using the small round Cut-Out. Attach circles in vertical rows, spaced 1/2 in. apart, on the sides of each cake, using a damp brush. Roll 1/2 in. diameter fondant balls and attach for bottom borders with damp brush. Position bow on top of cake.
