Brush a thin layer of apricot glaze over your cake. It is sticky and will help the fondant adhere, as well as adding a really nice flavor to the cake. Add a small amount of water to some apricot jam (a tablespoon or so, depending on how much jam you're using). Heat them together and stir until smooth. You can brush it on the cake with a pastry brush.
