A 9-inch round 2-layer cake decorated very simply requires 4-1/2 cups buttercream icing (See our handy chart for batter and icing amounts, baking and serving guide. Since the decorations on this cake might require extra icing, and our recipe makes about 3 cups icing, I would suggest making up 2 recipes.
