When baking pound cake it cracks in the middle. Why?

Alma - from Riverdale, IL

The steam that builds up inside of a pound cake while it is baking is what causes this crack that you're seeing. The hot steam builds up inside the cake and then escapes out through the crack. This is very commonly seen with pound cakes.
