Dear Nancy, I am writing from Santiago, Chile. I have been unable to find 100% vegetable oil shortening here. Is it possible to use a shortening that has part vegetable oil and part animal fat to make buttercream icing?

Anne - from Santiago, Chile

As long as the shortening you use has no flavor to it (some shortenings with part animal fat do!) you can use it to make Buttercream Icing.  Butter or margarine can also be substituted for vegetable shortening, though icings made with margarine are sometimes softer in consistency, and decorations don’t hold up as well.
