When I bake a cake it always burns on the side. I have never been able to have a light brown color on my cake. What is happening?

There are several reasons why the crumb on the side of your cake layers is overbrowning. Check the temperature of your oven to make sure it is accurate. If the oven is running too hot, adjust the temperature you’re setting it at when baking.

Also, make sure the cake pans are at least 2 inches from the sides of the oven, and that they are at least 2 inches from any other pan in the oven.

Finally, check your cake to see if it is done about 5 minutes before the lowest amount of time called for in your recipe or on the cake mix box.
