How do you prevent a cake from falling apart when you are placing the second layer on top?

The easiest way to move cake layers is to use a cake lifter – a large metal surface with handle that slides under the cake layer; you lift it, place over your cake and slide the layer off the lifter onto the bottom layer. If you don't have a cake lifter, a cake circle or board makes a good substitute. Use it the same way you use the cake lifter.
