Using a serrated knife, trim of the edges of the cake and cut the cake into an even rectangle. Cut into individual cake squares or diamonds, 1 1/2 by 2 inches with a sharp, serrated knife. An electric knife also works well. Cookie cutters with simple shapes can also be used to cut the cake, though if the cake is too thick, you might need to imprint the shape with the cutter, then cut the petit four with a knife.
