What type of icing is best for under fondant?

Zoe - from New Glarus, WI

Most people lightly spatula ice their cakes with buttercream icing before covering with rolled fondant. In Europe, it is more common to brush strained melted apricot preserves onto the cake. Both seal in the moisture and help fondant stick to the cake.
