While tilting the cake using a tilting turntable makes decorating easier, it’s not essential to successfully covering the sides of the cake with Cornelli lace. First, make sure the cake is level to where you can easily decorate it – you don’t want to have to stoop down when decorating. Then, while piping the Cornelli lace outlines onto the sides, you will want to bring your decorating tip close enough to the cake so that the piped icing sticks to the iced sides of the cake.
