Is there anything you can use as a substitute for shortening?

It depends on what type or recipe you are using the shortening in. In many cases, you can substitute butter for shortening in baked goods, but the finished cake, muffin or cookie, will have a slightly different texture. Most people won’t see any difference, though. In icing, butter can be used in place of shortening but the icing will be slightly more yellow.
