Often, if your fondant is drying out, you can soften it by kneading in vegetable shortening. Start with spreading a small amount on the countertop or surface you will knead on, then place a small amount on your hands; then knead until the fondant is softened and smooth. It may be necessary to add additional shortening, a small amount at a time.
