Why is shortening used in "buttercream" icing? I would expect it be made only with butter.

Beverley - from Ottawa, Ontario canada

While buttercream icing can be made only with butter, icing prepared with half butter half shortening or shortening holds up better at room temperature than icing that's all butter. Also, all-butter icing is slightly yellow. Half shortening is whiter, while all shortening is pure white, so when you color the icing, you get a truer color.
