How do you keep purchased icing decorations from bleeding into the icing?

Some purchased icing decorations, as well as some boldly colored icing decorations you make yourself do bleed color into buttercream icing. If it’s not possible to add the decorations at the very last minute, you can either place a small piece of waxed paper or a mini marshmallow between the decoration and icing.
