First, color your fondant or gum paste. Use whatever colors you like, or get a marbelized effect by kneading two different colored fondants together. Roll out the fondant or gum paste about 1/8 inch thick. Use a butterfly cutter to cut your shape. You can roll a small ball of fondant or gum paste into a log and shape it into the body of the butterfly, or just pipe the body on with icing. Give motion to your creatures by positioning the wings in a flower forming cup. Decorate the wings however you like. Sparkle gel or pearlized sprinkles look like little jewels, but are still edible.
