There are many differences between fondant and buttercream icing. Buttercream is what you see on many traditional cakes. It is made primarily of butter and sugar making it fluffy and easy to spread or to decorate cakes using decorating tips. Fondant is a thicker dough like consistency which can be rolled out like pastry or sugar cookie dough creating a beautiful smooth covering that can be placed over cakes and or used for molding decorations. Fondant creates a very smooth finish on cakes that can be harder to obtain with spatula icing buttercream.
